Individual Reflection

Being part of Robin had been a great learning experience as it was the first time I got to work on a project outside the School of Design. Engaging in a cross-functional team, I was able to contribute my design skills in creating an impactful and thoughtful solution while developing better communication and teamwork skills.
Since the beginning, I had played a crucial role in shaping the direction of our digital service. My idea got the 3rd most votes out of all the pitches during class. It was then chosen as one of the projects for other people to join. Reflecting…

Communication Studio II

After creating the poster, booklet, and mobile experience, I will be creating a 1-minute video about Massimo Vignelli. Considering time, motion, and sound, I hope to create an engaging animation that gives a quick insight into who Massimo Vignelli was. Using Massimo’s voice as the “spine” of my video, I hope to capture the essence of his life and philosophy and intrigue viewers so that they want to learn more about him.

Communication Studio II

For the second part of the Design Hero project series, I will design a booklet for Massimo Vignelli. Through the use of text, images, and typography, I hope to tell a story that is both captivating and inspiring. The main question to consider throughout this project is: How do I make a publication that both delights and resonates with my audience––people who know nothing about Massimo––while also informing and educating them?

Project Details:

  • Trim Size: 8.25 in x 10.5 in
  • Page Count: 16 Pages including self-cover
  • Binding: Saddle-stiched

Communication Studio II

Through an array of projects focused on a “Design Hero,” I will be building on the communication design concepts and skills from Communication Studio I. With emphases on visual hierarchy, typography, and story-telling, I will first develop familiarity with the existing guiding principles then take risks, explore, and play to create harmonious, striking, communicative visuals and interactions in my own way. From making mistakes, reflecting, and learning, I hope to develop my own design process and principles, contributing to my ability to create strong, engaging visuals and my overall growth as a designer.

My Research Method is Bulls-Eye Diagramming.

Joseph Kim: Simulation

In the first round of speed-dating, I talked to Joseph who presented the method of Simulation. Designers use simulation as a tool to really understand their target group’s experience and gain empathy. Through simulation, designers recreate their users’ environmental conditions, putting themselves in their users’ shoes. Through immersion achieved from simulation, designers gain user insight, which is helpful for the later product development stage.

Talking to Joseph, I realized that our research methods can be used together in a design process in many ways. For example, designers can first use simulation to gain an…

A Tool for Data Prioritization

Photo from Universal Methods of Design by Bruce Hanington and Bella Martin

Bulls-Eye Diagramming is a research tool used to help prioritize data during either the exploration stage or the concept generation/early prototyping stage in a design process. When designing for a complex system, it is easy to become entangled in small details and lose sight of the big picture. By using the Bulls-Eye Diagram, design teams can develop a better understanding of a problem space and focus their attention in the right area to accomplish their goals. The Bulls-Eye Diagram is made up of 3 concentric circles. The outermost circle represents an area with the least priority; the level of priority…

Our Reflections:

In the four chairs exercise from today’s Research Methods class, I was able to gain a different perspective on the way my peers and I communicate with one another. During my first role as the “Heart Chair,” I first tried to focus on the way my classmate used voice inflections and his body language to interpret emotion; however, as he read from his notes, it was difficult to pick up on clear emotions. I instead relied on the content of his strengths and goals and how I felt they related to him as a person…

Communications Studio I Project 4: Time & Motion

Project Overview

This project is a continuation of Project 3 as I will still be focusing on the typeface Caslon. However, unlike the previous project, the medium is motion graphics. The final outcome is a 1-minute typeface introduction video. Although the same principles (Unity/Harmony, Balance, Hierarchy, Scale/Proportion, Dominance/Emphasis, and Similarity/Contrast) still apply, I will now have to take into account sequence, motion, and sound. From this project, I hope to develop the ability to make sensible design decisions regarding motion graphics and create a communicative video that is also captivating and beautiful, along with honing my After Effects skills.
